At Newchurch St. Mary's, we encourage courageous advocacy and empower our pupils to speak up and take actions for issues that they care about, often focusing on injustice and issues affective vulnerable groups or populations. This encourages our children to become 'agents for change' by developing the skills, confidence and opportunities to advocate both for themselves and others.
We encourage this though:
-
Developing children's voice:
They gain the skills and confidence to express their views and advocate for their beliefs.
-
Taking Action:
Students are encouraged to take meaningful action, such as raising money for charities, campaigning for change, or promoting positive values within their school and community.
-
Promoting Change:
The ultimate goal is to empower students to become agents of change, contributing to a fairer and more just world.
-
Identifying Issues:
Students learn to recognize injustices and issues that are important to them, whether personal, local, or global.
Examples of Courageous Advocacy at Newchurch St. Mary's:
2025-2026
Autumn
Lorelai (Year 1) has decided she will take part in a 30 day yoga challenge to raise money for the charity 'Mind'.
The Rotakids decided they wanted to champion an initiative to ask for donations of coats from the school community. Local charities then distributed these to vulnerable people who needed them most.
2024-2025
Gracie (Year 6) decided she wanted to raise money for Pendleside Hospice by walking, swimming and cycling to reach her goal!
Rota Kids Campaign Christmas 2024
The Rota Kids chose to support the Christmas Shoe Box Appeal this year. They asked for boxes that could be given to local families in need on Christmas Day.
